\nDESCRIPTION
\nSikaCeram-188 KH is a high performance, thin layer,
\ncementitious tile adhesive, supplied ready to use with
\nthe addition of water, for bonding ceramic tiles, porcelain
\ntiles and mosaics of every type of floors and
\nwalls
\nUSES
\nSikaCeram-188 KH is a product used for bonding
\nceramic tiles in continuous thin layers, up to 10 mm
\nthick. Due to its excellent adhesion, it can be used in
\nsituations where traditional tile adhesives for bonding
\ntiles are not suitable due to the type of tile, the substrate
\nor the specific job situation \/ location.
\nSikaCeram-188 KH is suitable to bond the following
\ntypes of tile:

\nMixing Ratio 4.8 of water per 20 kg bag
\nConsumption This depends on the level, profile and surface roughness of the substrate,
\nthe size of the tiles and the technique of placing (simple placing or
\n“back”buttering). As a guide, in kilogram of powder per m\u00b2on flat surfaces:

\nAPPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
\nSUBSTRATE QUALITY \/ PRE-TREATMENT
\nEnsure all concrete slabs are allowed to cure fully
\nand have a wood float finish. Steel trowel finished
\nconcrete surfaces must be mechanically abraded prior
\nto commencement of tiling.
\n\u25aa
\nEnsure all surfaces are sound, dry and free from excessive
\nmovement, oil, dust, grease, wax, curing
\ncompounds, release agents and any other loose or
\ncontaminating materials. All dust, loose and friable
\nmaterial must be completely removed from all surfaces
\nbefore application of the product, preferably
\nby brush and\/or vacuum.
\n\u25aa
\n\u25aa Weak concrete and\/or cement laitance must be removed.
\nRepairs to the substrate, filing of blowholes \/
\nvoids, etc. must be carried out using appropriate
\nproducts from the SikaTop\u00ae or Sika\u00ae MonoTop\u00ae
\nrange of material.
\nIf the substrate is very porous, and\/or if the temperature
\nis high and the relative humidity is low, it is advisable
\nto pre-dampen the surface (do not leave any
\nstanding water) or apply Sika\u00ae Primer. Please contact
\nSika local representative for further information on
\nabout the recommended primer for the specific substrate.

\nThe maximum variation in the plane of the concrete
\nmust not exceed 5 mm in 3 metres for floors and 4
\nmm in 2 metres for walls. Cementitious substrates
\nmust be at least 1 month old. All rendered surfaces
\nmust be allowed to cure for at least 7 days prior to

\nthe commencement of tiling. Allow a waiting time of
\n24\u201348 hours if repair materials (e.g. SikaTop\u00ae \/ Sika\u00ae
\nMonoTop\u00ae) are used to repair the substrate.
\nThe recommended thickness for compressed fibre
\ncement sheets are minimum, 15 mm for floor substrates
\nand 9 mm for wall substrates.

\nThe recommended thickness for gypsum plasterboard
\nsheets are minimum, 10 mm for wall substrates
\n\u25aa
\nMIXING
\nMix thoroughly with clean water for a minimum of 3
\nminutes. Leave material to stand in container (for a
\nminimum of 5 minutes). Then, remix the material for
\n15 seconds – the product is now ready for use. Sika-
\nCeram-188 KH must be mechanically mixed using a
\nforced action mixer or in a clean container using a drill
\nand mixing paddle (< 500 rpm). A normal free fall concrete
\nmixer is not suitable.
\nAPPLICATION
\nSikaCeram-188 KH is applied using a notched trowel
\nonto the substrate. Choose the size of trowel that will
\ngive the right thickness on the back of the tile. Once
\nthe surfaces have been appropriately prepared, apply
\nSikaCeram-188 KH onto the substrate using an appropriate
\nserrated trowel. SikaCeram-188 KH should be
\napplied onto the substrate at a rate of 1 m\u00b2 at a time.
\nApplication rates greater than this can result in the adhesive
\nskinning before the tiles are laid. Once the adhesive
\nis applied onto the substrate, ensure thatit
\ndoes not skin prior to bedding the tiles. If a surface
\nfilm has developed, pass a notched trowel through the
\nadhesive. Rework the adhesive before placing the tiles
\nwithin the open time. When placing the tiles into the
\nadhesive, press them in using the Tarver Method;
\npress, slide perpendicular and return. Ensure full coverage
\nof adhesive and no voids is underneath the tiles.
\nFor tiles with lugs, grooves or uneven backing, it may
\nbe required to back butter the tile with adhesive before
\nplacing them.
\nThe final bed thickness of SikaCeram-188 KH should be
\nat least 1 mm for wall and 3 mm for floor. Once tiling
\nworks are completed, do not disturb the tiled surface
\nfor at least 6\u20138 hours (at +20 \u00b0C).
\nAs a guide: SikaCeram-188 KH is used for fixing absorbent
\ntiles up to a maximum size of 10 000 cm\u00b2 (e.g.
\n60 cm x 120 cm) for indoor floors, up to 3 600 cm\u00b2
\n(e.g. 60 cm x 60 cm) for indoor walls and outdoor paving,
\nand 2 100 cm\u00b2 (e.g. 30 cm x 60 cm or 45 cm x 45
\ncm) for fa\u00e7ades without any mechanical clamps.
\nCLEANING OF EQUIPMENT
\nClean all tools and application equipments with clean
\nwater immediately after use. Hardened or cured material
\ncan only be removed mechanically.
\nIMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
\nFollow the recommended water dosage when mixing
\nSikaCeram-188 KH. Do not exceed the maximum recommended
\nwater dosage or go below the minimum
\nrecommended water dosage.

\nApply only to sound, prepared substrates. Do not exceed
\nthe maximum layer thickness or go below the
\nminimum layer thickness.
\n\u25aa
\nDo not attempt to dampen the applied adhesive to
\nextend the open time as this interferes with the
\nbond performance.
\n\u25aa
\nMovement joints (width of 6\u201310 mm) must be
\nprovided to allow for movement between adjacent
\nbuilding components, over existing joints in the substrate,
\naround fixed elements in the floor (e.g.
\ncolumns), at internal vertical corners, around floor
\nperimeters, in internal floors (every 6\u20139 m), in external
\nfloors (every 4.5 m), on wall surfaces at storey
\nheights horizontally (3\u20134.5 m apart vertically). Movement
\njoints should go right through the tile adhesive
\nbed to the background and be kept free from dirt
\nand adhesive droppings
